Michael Douglas told Catherine Zeta-Jones he would be the father of her kids during their 1st meeting

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have experienced many life changes together, including moving between the US and Bermuda with their children, Dylan and Carys Zeta-Douglas. Today, their son Dylan is an adult and has chosen his own path at 20, despite the pressure that comes with being the child of Hollywood icons, Michael and Kirk Douglas. The couple strived to give Dylan a balanced upbringing, even relocating for his benefit.

Michael Douglas, born in New Jersey on September 25, 1944, to actors Diana and Kirk Douglas, grew up mainly with his mother after his parents’ divorce. He attended prestigious schools like Eaglebrook and the Choate School but spent summers on film sets with his father, Kirk. Despite Kirk’s reservations about the pressures of Hollywood, Michael pursued acting, forgoing an Ivy League education for California’s hippie movement. By 1966, he landed his first role, and his career took off.

Douglas made his film debut in Cast a Giant Shadow, an uncredited role alongside his father. He learned early about the insecurities and conduct of stars, shaping his grounded approach. In 1968, Michael graduated and moved to New York City to pursue acting, studying at renowned institutions like the American Place Theatre and the Neighborhood Playhouse. His big break came in 1972 with the TV show The Streets of San Francisco, which earned him Emmy nominations and established him as a Hollywood star.

In 1975, he produced the iconic One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture. By the late ’70s, Michael was both a successful actor and producer, with films like The China Syndrome further solidifying his career.

Douglas met Catherine Zeta-Jones in 1996, after being captivated by her performance in The Mask of Zorro. Despite a rocky first impression where Michael declared he would father her children, the pair connected over shared dinners and phone calls. They married in 1999, despite their 25-year age gap, and their romance became a media sensation.

In August 2000, Dylan was born, followed by their daughter Carys in 2003. Despite the usual ups and downs, their love remained strong. For the first few years of Dylan’s life, the family lived in Bermuda, where they sought a quiet life away from the pressures of fame. Michael, with roots in Bermuda, believed it provided the children with independence and privacy. However, the family moved to New York when Dylan was diagnosed with dyslexia and needed specialized education.

Dylan attended the Windward School, where he thrived, even delivering an emotional speech about his experience and his father’s battle with tongue cancer. His school life gave him the freedom to be himself, and his parents supported him throughout the challenges. Michael, in particular, emphasized that his priority was for his children to be “good citizens of the planet.”

Now an adult, Dylan has pursued a career far removed from Hollywood. He co-founded the organization “Make Room Now,” where he works as the Political & Outreach Director, focusing on historical movements and activism. Known for his adventurous spirit, Dylan also enjoys activities like skydiving, though this sometimes worries his father.

Dylan, who shares a strong bond with Michael, honored his father on Father’s Day with a heartfelt tribute. Despite the challenges the Douglas family has faced, including health issues and public scrutiny, their close-knit relationship remains strong.
